Getting Better: Inzectors and Wind-Ups claiming the stage
This is a column that helps you get better at your favorite games. Whether it's knowing the odds to draw black trains that are left in the deck in Ticket to Ride, or understanding the ramifications of picking a Rocket Courier X-99 early in a game of Ascension, if you're looking to gain an edge over your friends, this is the column for you.
Last time, I gave you a quick overview of the most popular Yu-Gi-Oh! Decks. You might remember me mentioning the latest Yu-Gi-Oh! expansion Order of Chaos, which is bound to shake up the metagame once again. We'll take a closer look at the Inzektor archetype first, which was introduced in the set and features some strong synergies that can easily take a game upside down!
A Bug's Life
The Inzektors feature a game mechanic that isn't entirely new: They can be used to equip each other to either increase the stats of the equipped Monster or add another effect to its arsenal. You may remember seeing this before with Union Monsters as well as the Dragunities. However, the Inzektors are the true masters of the art as they can easily unleash devastating combos that lay waste to your opponent's field!
Key to an Inzektor player's game plan is Inzektor Hornet. The 3 star Monster doesn't put up much of a fight with its mere 500 ATK and 200 DEF, so you'll often find him ending up in your Graveyard early on. Ironically, this is exactly where you want this card to be as it's step 1 in setting up your main combo.Follow it up with Inzektor Dragonfly, another 3 star Monster with slightly more impressive stats. With 1800 DEF, it can withstand most opposing lower level threats and also work as a way to buy you some time. Still, its most common use is Normal Summoning it in face-up Attack Position as you can then activate its effect: Once per turn, you can equip it with 1 Inzektor Monster from your Graveyard. Inzektor Hornet should be your target of choice, providing Dragonfly with a little buff, slightly raising its ATK and DEF as well as increasing its Level by 3.
Not really what more experienced players would call a head-turner, but there's still more to this set-up. You can now activate Inzektor Hornet's third effect and send it to the Graveyard to destroy 1 card on the field of your choice. This translates to you gaining a lead in card advantage, which is always a strong play!
But wait, there's more!
At this point, Inzektor Dragonfly's second effect kicks in. It allows you to Special Summon another Inzektor Monster from your Deck (you can't pick another copy of it; otherwise things would really become a little bonkers). Then again, there's Inzektor Centipede, another 3 star Monster with a good ATK value of 1600 as well as 1200 DEF. Just like Inzektor Dragonfly, you can equip it with an Inzektor Monster from your Graveyard once per turn. You probably guessed that we'll invite Inzektor Hornet to the party for yet another time. Proceed and make use of its third effect again to take out a second opposing card! While you can't Special Summon another Monster from your Deck, Inzektor Centipede's effect lets you add another Inzektor Monster from your Deck to your hand. If you expect your opponent to come up with something and strike back, simply pick another Inzektor Dragonfly so you can start all over again in your following turn! This combo requires very little set-up and offers you quite a huge reward. There are few ways for your opponent to make sure you can't tear apart his field. Also, don't forget that you're left with two 3 star Monsters after you ran through the combo. They give you access to a number of Xyz Monsters, e.g.
- Number 17: Leviathan Dragon – a powerful beatstick
- Leviair the Sea Dragon – which can bring back banished Monsters and
- Wind-Up Zenmaines – a versatile card your opponent will have to destroy three times and if he can't get rid of it the same turn he attempted to, he'll always lose a card!
So you can follow up the combo with another strong play, making it either harder for your opponent to get back in to the game.
Here's one possible built of this Deck:
20 Monsters:Expect your opponent to run at least something close to this and you'll know what you're dealing with. We'll highlight some ways how to fight the deck in just a minute, let me just finish the description of the archetype on a positive note, because one of the best things about Inzektors is their high affordability! None of the cards listed here is in the triple digits as you have very little use for Tour Guide From the Underworld in this archetype. Additionally, most Inzektor cards are Super Rares at best, so it's rather easy to get a hold of them!3 Inzektor Dragonfly

Recap and how to fight them
Inzektors have access to one of the most powerful combos that Yu-Gi-Oh! has seen so far. They can easily get rid of several cards on the opponent's side of the field, so make sure not to overextend and always have some ace up your sleeve to shut down the devastating play sequence explained above.
Some cards that can give you the edge in the match-up are Effect Veiler and Fiendish Chain as they can strip Inzektor Dragonfly of its effect before it can equip itself with Inzektor Hornet. Be sure to add them (or other viable answers) to your Deck if you expect Inzektors to make a strong showing at the next tournament you're attending!
Wind-Ups
Unlike the Inzectors, the Wind-Ups have already been around for a little while. Their unique feature are one-time effects which can be rather powerful, however, in order to use them again, you need to either temporarily flip the Monster face-down or remove it from the field. Quite a few players considered the theme to be a "fun deck"; that was before Order of Chaos added 2 new cards to the mix, though! Now they are among the top Decks in the current format.
One of the older cards that make an appearance in the newer iterations of the archetype is Wind-Up Hunter. It allows you to Tribute another face-up Wind-Up Monster to have your opponent discard 1 random card from his hand to the Graveyard. While the effect is rather powerful, you need to find ways to feed Wind-Up Hunter with enough other Monsters to gain a huge advantage. Additionally, you need to turn it face-down or remove it from the field temporarily so you can use it several times during the same turn. This is where the new cards come in!Wind-Up Rat can be switched from face-up Attack Position to face-up Defense Position to Special Summon another Wind-Up Monster from your Graveyard. This sets up your big combo in this Deck as you can then use the Special Summoned Wind-Up Hunter together with Wind-Up Rat to Xyz Summon Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity.
Detach Wind-Up Hunter to Special Summon another Wind-Up Monster from your hand or Deck. Simply bring out another copy of Wind-Up Rat and use its effect to bring back Wind-Up Hunter from your Graveyard for a second time.
This might seem like you're back to square one at first, but keep in mind that you now have the 2 Wind-Up Monsters together with another Wind-Up Monster on the field which can serve as Tribute fodder for the effect of Wind-Up Hunter! Tribute Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity to have your opponent lose a random card from his hand. Then, use your two remaining Wind-Up Monsters to bring out another Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity. Special Summon the last Wind-Up Rat from your Deck, return Wind-Up Hunter for a third time and proceed with Tributing Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity to have your opponent lose another random card from his hand.Although you don't have any Wind-Up Rats left in your Deck, you can still bring out Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity one last time. Simply use its effect to Special Summon another Wind-Up Hunter from your Deck, Tribute the Xyz Monster and have your opponent lose a third card from his Deck.
Keep in mind you simply need 1 Wind-Up Hunter in your Graveyard as well as a Wind-Up Rat in your hand to combo off. In this regard, the Wind-Ups are quite similar to the Inzektors, however, your opponent won't always be holding onto many cards. Many Decks try to apply as much pressure as possible from early on, so make sure to not wait too long until you go for your strongest combo.Recap and how to fight them
Basically, most of the cards that work well against the Inzectors also work well against the Wind-Up Monsters. Additionally, you can also ditch Maxx "C" to draw into new cards while your opponent is constantly Special Summoning Monsters to the field. In fact, you will even end up with more cards in your hand than your opponent can make you discard!
Order of Chaos provided 2 Decks with the necessary tools to claim the top seats at the upcoming tournaments. Make sure to get familiar with the way they're working so you can come out winning in close matches!
