Nostalgia is a powerful weapon in the marketing armory, and the guys tasked with realizing this 4th Edition Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set locked and loaded the Halcyon Memory Gun from day one. Gamers of a certain age cannot fail to fall in love with the Red Box edition of the Starter Set, as the artwork and design is identical to the product released in the 80's. However, the similarities are soon eclipsed by the taut and updated rules package of 4th Edition. While the set never claims to be all-encompassing, it provides a solid foundation of fun to draw in a fresh crowd and keep them entertained. The set presents a step-by-step progression that takes a complete novice through a chose-your-adventure character creation sequence, a couple of quests, a strong multi-encounter adventure, and ideas for further expansion. It's also the first time I can remember that a Dungeons & Dragons starter product contains both a dungeon and a dragon!
Man, this is the game that started it all. If you are into Roleplaying games and want to get an idea of where it all began, you have to check this out. It's that awesome!
I remember seeing this at old bookstores when I was a kid. I loved D&D so much growing up as a teenager. This first set is what got me hooked on fantasy. I would buy this for nostalgia.
